Activities
ELSA is active through its three key areas:
- Academic Activities (AA) are a tool for bridging theory and practice and the programmes in the area of AA are helping law students to develop there academic skills. Through Academic Activities ELSA makes a direct contribution to legal education. ELSA has during the years developed a considerable number of different projects. Publications such as ELSA Selected Papers on European Law (SPEL) and ELSA Guide to Legal Studies in Europe (GLSE) are an important part of ELSA’s activities. The GLSE is also a part of the Studies Abroad Programme, which has as objective to encourage students to study in foreign countries. Furthermore, there are competitions such as Moot Court Competitions and Essay Competitions, and events organised with professional life in mind within the Lawyers at Work events.
- Seminars and Conferences (S&C): ELSA is organising a more than 50 conferences and seminars every year on local, national and on international level. Furthermore we organise Bilateral Study Visits to other ELSA groups or visits to prisons or to the House of Parliament within this area. In Hungary the local groups have already organised a number of events. For example ELSA Budapest organised international criminal law conference, or ELSA Pécs had two times its international law school on European law. ELSA Szeged organised successful visits to the Hungarian parliament or to the High Court of Justice.
- STEP: STEP is an abbreviation and it stands for: Student Trainee Exchange Programme. STEP enables law students and young lawyers to spend a period of time working abroad in a law related area. Thus introducing them to a different legal system and enabling them to gain valuable professional experience. The application for STEP jobs is continuous through ELSA Online! For details, ask your local Vice President for STEP!
and furthermore:
- ELSA Moot Court Competition (EMCC): EMCC is part of the area “Academic Activities”, but because of its high importance, we introduce it separately. The EMCC is the international moot court competition of ELSA, based on the law of the World Trade Organisation. The language of the EMCC is English.
The moot court has three rounds: The national, the regional and the final oral round. The Final Oral Round takes place in Geneva, at the headquarters of WTO, where not only the European teams, but teams from all over the world take part.
ELSA Hungary organises the National Round of EMCC every year. It was organised in 2006 in Pécs, in 2007 in Szeged and in Budapest in 2008. The National Round of 2010 takes place in Budapest.
